THE cost of caring for injured Australian veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq has exploded in the past two years, with mental illness being the leading cause of disability.

The most shocking figures show that in the past two years the number of diagnosed alcoholics jumped 57 per cent from 177 to 278.

Figures also show that Australian soldiers had been returning from Afghanistan and Iraq with drug addictions after using cocaine, heroin and other hard drugs on tours of duty.

IEDs are the main killers of foreign soldiers in Afghanistan. More than 500 US-led troops have been killed in the war-torn country in 2009, including more than 310 Americans.

"The Taliban in Afghanistan have built a new generation of improvised explosive devices which is not detectable. The new IEDs, called "Omar", have been made by the Taliban technical experts inside Afghanistan and cost only $85 each"

More Economic Gloom On The Horizon?

As the worlds bankers gather for top secret talks in Australia and the global share markets are showing yet another slump, one wonders whether we are in for more financial misery globally.

The Fat Cat bankers have a lot to answer for.

"THE world's top central bankers began arriving in Australia yesterday as renewed fears about the strength of the global economic recovery gripped world share markets. Representatives from 24 central banks and monetary authorities including the US Federal Reserve and European Central Bank landed in Sydney to meet tomorrow at a secret location. Organised by the Bank for International Settlements last year, the event will be dominated by Asian delegations and is expected to include governors of the Peoples Bank of China, the Bank of Japan and the Reserve Bank of India. Fears countries including Greece, Portugal, Spain and Dubai could default on debt repayments combined with disappointing US jobs data could spook investors."
